LAKE ATITLAN/PANAJACHEL

Located in the Guatemalan highlands, about two hours from Antigua, this unique lake is huddled between three volcanoes. The K’iche’, Tz’utujil and Kaqchikels are the predominant Maya ethnic groups that provide an explosion of color appreciated in their textiles, crafts, artworks, and way of life.

Panajachel is one of the biggest towns on the lake and offers many choices of hotels, restaurants, bars, and stores. It is also the main hub for boat transportation to the lakeside villages available all day until about sunset.

Seventy years ago the fortunate few who visited Atitlan had nowhere to stay. To accommodate them, Ernesto Weymann built Hotel Regis. His granddaughter, Maria Mercedes Weymann, owns and runs the hotel today.
